TAYLOR (CBS Detroit) – A $5,000 reward is being offered for the tipster who can lead authorities to whomever tortured and killed a Downriver family pet.

Animal right organization PETA said members of the Lowe family, of Taylor, last Wednesday were horrified to find their beloved rescued cat Zsa Zsa Maroney’s mutilated body tied to a tree limb.

PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien said Zsa Zsa had been tortured and choked, her legs bound together with string.

Taylor police are investigating the incident but have yet to make any arrests, prompting PETA to offer the hefty cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the crime.

“It takes a dangerous lack of empathy for others’ suffering to cause the terror and agony that this cat experienced when she was tortured, choked, and killed,” O’Brienn said, in a media release. “PETA is urging anyone with information about this case to come forward now, before someone else gets hurt.”

Following this incident, PETA is stressing the importance of keeping pet cats indoors. In addition to being hurt by a cruel person, cats who roam outdoors risk contracting communicable diseases, getting lost, injured, stolen or hit by cars.

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
