MILFORD (WWJ/AP) – An Oakland County woman accused of beating her husband with a crowbar two weeks ago has been charged with murder after he died of his injuries.
Yvonne Cortis was arraigned Wednesday in the death of 68-year-old Greg Cortis, who died last weekend. She’s also charged with animal cruelty.
A judge in Novi District Court set bond at $1 million. Cortis says she’ll hire her own attorney.
Family members have told police that the 58-year-old Milford woman has a history of mental illness. They also indicated that this may not have been the first case of domestic violence.
Authorities said Cortis admitted her role in the Nov. 30 attack, saying she beat her husband and dog with a crowbar because they were sick and suffering and she wanted to put “them out of their misery.” According to reports, Greg Cortis had Alzheimer’s Disease.
Carley was taken to an area veterinarian for treatment and is expected to recover.
