WASHINGTON TWP. (WWJ/AP) – Authorities say they’ve removed 14 snakes from a metro Detroit home where they were being bred and sold.

Investigators from Macomb County Animal Control followed a tip Tuesday to a home on 26 Mile Road in Washington Township where they found 14 snakes that were being severely neglected.

Officials say the owners were illegally selling the reptiles, which include ball pythons and corn snakes, and depriving them of food and water.

Animal Control Officer Jeff Randazzo told The Macomb Daily that some of the snakes, which were in aquariums and rubber storage tubs, didn’t appear healthy and were in need of medical attention. He said authorities responded after receiving a call about snakes being sold from the home by a couple living there.

The snakes were seized and will be taken to a long term care facility once they have been able to recover.

Animal cruelty charges could be brought in the case. Randazzo said it’s illegal to possess exotic animals under a township ordinance.
