LILLEY TOWNSHIP (WWJ/AP) - Authorities removed dozens of animals from a West Michigan home where they found at least 10 dead kittens and a fawn in a freezer.
The Grand Rapids Press reported Newaygo County Sheriff’s deputies found “extremely poor” conditions when they executed a warrant Friday at a home on Bingham Ave. in Lilley Township where someone was practicing veterinary services without a license.
Officials confiscated at least 50 cats, one dog, two rabbits and a baby skunk. The sheriff’s department said a dead cat also was found in the yard of the home, located about 55 miles north of Grand Rapids.
Authorities said most of the animals didn’t have enough food or water and some appeared sick.
Two people were scheduled to appear Thursday in 78th District Court to face formal animal cruelty and other charges. According to a release, one is lodged in the Newaygo County Jail and the other is out on bail. Their names were not immediately released.
The rescued animals were taken to the Newaygo County Animal Shelter for evaluation and treatment.
