DETROIT (WWJ) –  The Michigan Humane Society is looking for the person responsible after a dog was found hanged in Detroit.

Spokesman Ryan McTeague says they got a call from a woman who made the gruesome discovery, Wednesday, in the 7 Mile Road and Lahser area.

The woman told MHS investigators she became concerned after she saw a man walk into an abandoned home with a dog — and walk out without the animal a short time later.

McTeague said the woman waited a bit before going into the house, only to find the dog was dead.

“We were able to get out there and confirm that there was a dog that had been hanged, recently,” McTeague told WWJ Newsradio 950.  “Upon further searching throughout the house, we did find another dog that was alive, in relatively good condition, in the basement. It was running around in kind of sewage water, so we’re currently caring for that Detroit dog at our Center for Animal Care.”

Investigators don’t have any suspects, and a $2,500 reward has been offered for information leading to the person responsible.  Anyone with information is asked to call MHS Cruelty Investigation Department 313-872-3401.

Meantime, McTeague offered a message to dog owners:

“If there’s a situation where you no longer want your pet, or can’t keep your pet, please reach out to the Michigan Humane Society; we’re an organization that can help,” he said. “Never resort to something like this. It’s absolutely senseless, heartless and there’s no reason for it.”
