HOWELL (WWJ/AP) – A Michigan woman has been arraigned on animal cruelty charges after authorities removed about 90 dogs and puppies from her property northwest of Detroit.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports that 76-year-old Margaret Elaine Komorny of Howell Township pleaded not guilty Thursday in Howell District Court. She was released on bond.

The charged come after — armed with a search warrant — sheriff’s deputies, animal control and the Humane Society visited  Komorny’s Livingston County farm  after receiving multiple reports about potential animal neglect at the property, about 45 miles northwest of Detroit.

Once they were inside the home, investigators found large-breed dogs and puppies, mainly poodle mixes, living in what were described as disgusting conditions. The animals, she said, had severely matted fur and untreated medical conditions — including dental and eye problems; and filthy floors were coated in urine and feces.

Komorny has denied allegations by authorities that the animals were living in unsanitary conditions. She has called her business a “kennel.”

Rescuers also found multiple cats and at least two litters of kittens. Officials say the dogs were being sold online.

A magistrate on Thursday also ordered Komorny to have no new animals, but is allowing her to keep horses that already are on her farm. Animal control officers also are authorized to perform inspections of her property.

All of the dogs and cats were taken to a temporary shelter for care. Fritz said the animals were being treated by veterinarians and won’t be available until the legal case is settled.
