DETROIT (WWJ/AP) – Some Michigan Humane Society staffers will be spending the night in doghouses this week, as part of an effort to raise awareness about the dangers of leaving pets outside in freezing temperatures.

Members of the state Humane Society’s cruelty investigation department and emergency rescue teams will be sleeping outside in the doghouses in Detroit for eight hours beginning Tuesday night and ending Wednesday morning.

In January, we reported that the Humane Society’s Cruelty Investigation team had already responded to high numbers of weather related calls, and the Michigan Humane Society was urging pet owners to protect their animals.

As always, animal welfare officials are asking for people to keep watch for any animals which may be in danger – in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park call 313-872-3401 that’s the Michigan Humane Society’s Cruelty Hotline if you fear an animal is in distress.
